Basic Surrogate Qualifications
To protect your health and ensure a positive surrogacy experience for everyone involved, Tandem follows clear eligibility guidelines. You may qualify to become a gestational carrier if you meet the following requirements:
- Between 21 and 40 years of age
- Resident of the United States
- Body Mass Index (BMI) between 19 and 31
- Have had at least one healthy pregnancy and delivery
- No history of drug use, alcohol abuse, smoking, or vaping
- Emotionally and financially stable, with a strong personal support system
- Not currently receiving government financial assistance
Meeting these baseline requirements allows our team to explore whether surrogacy may be a safe and fulfilling option for you.
Why Surrogate Requirements Matter
Surrogacy is a medical, emotional, and legal commitment. Requirements are in place to protect your wellbeing, ensure healthy pregnancies, and support the intended parents who place deep trust in the process.
By setting clear surrogate qualifications, Tandem helps ensure that gestational carriers feel prepared, supported, and confident throughout their journey.
Health and Pregnancy History
A healthy pregnancy history is one of the most important factors in determining eligibility. Having carried and delivered a child without major complications helps confirm that your body is physically prepared for surrogacy.
During screening, medical records from previous pregnancies are carefully reviewed to ensure your safety and readiness before moving forward.
Lifestyle and Stability Considerations
Surrogacy requires consistency, responsibility, and a supportive environment. Emotional stability, reliable transportation, and a strong support system are essential for navigating appointments, pregnancy, and recovery.
Financial stability is also important so surrogacy remains a choice rooted in generosity and confidence, not necessity.
What Happens After You Meet the Requirements?
Meeting initial surrogate requirements does not mean you are committed to becoming a gestational carrier. It simply allows you to move forward with the screening process to learn more.
If you qualify, the next steps include medical evaluations, psychological screening, and matching which are designed to ensure you feel informed, protected, and supported.
